The Hidden Gem
mural with community component
________________________
Commissioned by the Arts Council of Wilmington, North Carolina, this mural completes the renovation of Bijou Park, a historic downtown space that once housed the state’s first movie theater and now serves as a pedestrian corridor connecting Main Street to the riverfront.
The narrative pays homage to the park’s cinematic past while highlighting North Carolina’s natural “jewels.” The title draws from the word bijou, meaning a small precious gem, and reflects the park’s transformation into a quiet oasis tucked within the city.
More than 500 community members participated in painting the mural over the course of a single weekend, turning the project into a shared celebration of the space’s history and its renewed role in downtown Wilmington.
