The Offering
sculptural mural wall
________________________
Officially the first mural in the City of Dallas' permanent Public Art Collection, "The Offering" is a stand-alone sculptural mural wall painted on all visible sides. The composition shows a young latino man wearing a military uniform and looking away. Behind him, on the back side of the wall, a mother figure extends her hands in an offering gesture. An all-too-common story amongst immigrant families, she offers her son forward, conscious or not, as an exchange for living in this land. Her hands release a flying dove —a timeless symbol of peace, love, and freedom— which wraps around the wall onto his side, a portion of its wing superimposed on the image of the young man. The dove is a reflection on hope and faith, but also speaks of her loving wishes while surrendering to that which is outside of her control. More universally, this piece is an ode to a mother's role in this life, and the dignified suffering she endures when children leave the nest, wherever their destination may lead.
